OVERVIEW
Retatrutide is an experimental once-weekly triple hormone receptor agonist developed by Eli Lilly and Company for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. It uniquely targets the receptors for GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon, mimicking their effects to suppress appetite, slow digestion, and increase energy expenditure.
Currently, retatrutide is not FDA-approved and is only available to participants in Phase 3 clinical trials, such as the TRIUMPH studies. Early trial data indicates it is highly effective, with patients losing an average of 17.5% to 24.2% of their body weight over 48 weeks, alongside significant reductions in liver fat and improvements in glycemic control.
Common side effects are primarily gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, which tend to increase with higher dosages. Less common adverse events include fatigue, headaches, and mild increases in heart rate. Due to its investigational status, it is not legally available for general prescription outside of approved clinical research settings.
